not preaching, just sharing my love of paleo

alf12012 came and went faster than I can say, “I do.”  It was a big year (got married, turned 30) and somehow this blog got pushed to the back burner.  I’ve missed the creative outlet of artlovefashion, the research, the writing, the sharing and the feedback.  Even though 2013 is already a few months deep, its time for me to start again fresh and thank all the subscribers (old and new) who have stuck with me, so thank you!

When it comes to eating (ok, eating healthy) I prefer the term ‘lifestyle choice’ over the toxic word ‘dieting.’  (This isn’t a ‘diet’ post per say, it’s more of a reflection on a ‘lifestyle choice’ I’m trying out, thanks to the uber-fab Miss Natalie B.)

I like to think of myself as a pretty healthy person overall.  I get to the gym when I can and I bring my meals to work so I eat healthiest during the weekday (or so I thought.)  On the weekends it’s a different story and I don’t think twice when reaching for that 2nd (ok, 4th) slice of pizza…or have much regret…until my pants feel a little more snug Monday morning than I remember them fitting Friday afternoon.  Several months ago my cousin came over for dinner as we try to do once a week (but in this case several weeks had passed since our last visit) and as soon as she took off her coat my jaw hit the floor when I saw how much weight she had lost since we last saw one another (I’m talking like 15lbs and she was small to begin with.)  She started raving about eating Paleo and I was intrigued but I hated the thought of restricting what one can/ cannot eat because that would feel too much like a ‘diet.’  She had me try some of her go-to snack she always carries around with her – a homemade trailmix…it was more delish than I wanted to admit.  I tried to convince her that what I was eating during the day was just as healthy as Paleo but she dismissed my fiber bars as being as healthy as cookie dough and cringed at the sight of my favorite honey flavored Greek yogurt.  I decided to just try being a little Paleo after my next trip to the grocery store.  Needless to say I have never felt better since trying Paleo (sorry if that sounds gimmicky, but its true) and although I’m not eating Paleo all the time, it has helped me maintain my weight during those insane weeks I cannot get to the gym and end up ordering takeout for dinner here and there.  There are also some phenomenal health benefits to this way of eating but I’ll let you find that out on your own if you’re so inclined why Paleo?

Ok, so here’s the Paleo breakdown:

 IMG_4048 IMG_4051

Paleo is all about lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds- this ‘lifestyle choice’ avoids dairy, grain, processed food, sugar, legumes and starch.  Instead of my beloved fiber bar I now pack a Larabar for breakfast (carrot cake is their best flavor- avoid chocolate coconut.)  Instead of peanut butter on a banana I snack on almond butter with my banana.  Like Natalie, I too now carry around a beloved ‘trailmix’ although mine is much less exciting since it only consists of golden raisins and almonds but it really is a perfect snack.  Now I reach for this yummy mixture instead of a string cheese or Greek yogurt.  It really didn’t take much for me to tweak my daily eating habits and eating Paleo doesn’t require a lot of prep work.  Here are some really yummy Paleo recipes which are tasty enough to make even if you don’t want anything to do with Paleo:

DIY: some great ideas to simplify, salvage & organize

I love any great organizational tip that involves items I already have.  With space always an issue in my downtown apartment- especially in the kitchen, I’m always trying to find ways to utilize each area to the max.  Here are some really innovative ideas I’ve come across for ways to help save space, organize and take advantage of every nook and cranny of your home.  I’m especially thrilled about the ingenious use of a magazine rack as a cutting board holder inside a cabinet door- brilliant!

1.  Store cleaning supplies in a shoe holder over the back of your laundry room or closet door.  The products will be easy to find and access, and it saves space.

2.  Mount a magazine rack inside a cabinet door to stash your cutting boards out of sight.  The easiest way to mount the rack is to take the cabinet door off its hinges and lay it down.  Predrill the screw holes for the L-brackets and mount the rack to the center of the cabinet door.

3.  Display your stash of coins from trips abroad by turning them into funky & functional magnets.  All you need is a glue gun or some super glue and a small pack of magnets (available from places like Target or your local hardware store.)

4.  As someone with a raging scarf addiction who owns more than I could ever count, I’m always trying to rearrange & relocate them around my closets so they are on display while not taking up too much space.  I’ve never been thrilled with how I’ve stored them but this new idea for a scarf rack involving a towel rack and shower curtain hangers is too brilliant to ignore.  Plus, I love how this storage idea keeps them all  on display and so easily accessible.

5.  Use spare ice-cube tray’s or pick up a couple new ones to use as all-purpose jewelry holders in your top dresser drawer.  No more tangled necklaces or late mornings spent endlessly searching for that second earring.

6.  Salvage your broken compacts and eyeshadow with a few drops of alcohol.  This will turn the broken bits back into a paste that will harden into a dry cake and be good as new.

one-stop shop: interior design, jewelry & vintage decor

I was fortunate to recently come across the dreamy and beautiful home design & accessories website of artist and creative designer, D.L. Rhein.  I was so inspired by her design career, passion for creating beautiful things and the interior designs and decorative offerings available on her website and in her LA-based stores, I couldn’t wait to share.  I also became an instant fan of her design projects which feature unique pops of colors and statement pieces through non-traditional items (such as the turquoise beaded chandelier featured below) in an otherwise neutral space.  D.L. Rhein began her career crafting from home which lead to the development of homemade picture frames, which turned into a full-scale decorative, accessories business.  DLRhein.com offers sophisticated and whimsical products spanning from jewelry, vintage items, furniture, artwork, apparel and entertaining essentials.  She is known for producing unexpected combinations inspired by both timeless classics and the latest trends.

lovesit: fall treats & recipes

October has always been one of my favorite months- and as much as I absolutely love Halloween, the anticipation of October’s grand finale brings a sense of dread.  I know that as soon as the night ends and I wake up the following morning, it’s going to be November and winter is right around the corner.  Not that I don’t love winter, but fall is so fleeting in New England, I try to experience as much of it as possible during its short stay.  Once October 1st rolls around, I do my best to savor all the traditions autumn has to offer- ie: treats, baked goods and more treats.  I love anything pumpkin flavored and these days just about anything edible has been infused with a pumpkin spice or flavoring.  Although fall may be coming to a sudden end, I am in no rush to stop baking (or eating) my favorite apple, pumpkin and cider treats.  Nor am I in any rush to remove the remaining evidence of my dog Skip’s Halloween costume.

1. These delicious pumpkin cheesecake cupcakes are my new favorite quick & easy party treat.  This recipe is available here.

2.  Cider Donut’s are really the only donut I’ll go out of my way to have- and since they are only around a few months out of the year there’s nothing to feel guilty about.  Unless you decide to start making them a little more regularly.  This recipe is available here.

3. Nothing says fall has arrived quite like the perfect slice of apple pie- and no other smell makes your home more cozy and inviting.  The recipe for the perfect apple pie is available here.

Happy Halloween!

homemade enchiladas with savory mole sauce

After a big haul at the grocery store and farmers markets, I really love winding down my weekend with a hearty and delicious Sunday dinner.  This past Sunday I knew I was in the mood for Mexican food but I really wanted to make something a little more savory than basic taco’s.  I came across a great recipe for homemade enchilada’s with mole sauce on recipegirl.com that featured great step-by-step pictures (2 are featured below, middle) and an end result that looked mouth-watering.  My search for Sunday night’s perfect meal had come to an end and I was not disapointed with the meal I got from this recipe.  The mole sauce was so simple and tastier than even my favorite Mexican restaurant’s mole sauce.  I almost never follow a recipe exactly and this was no exception.  Once the zucchini and onions were done, I kept them in the large skillet I was using and added the cooked beef along with taco seasoning and a cup of water.  I let the mixture simmer and thicken for a few minutes- to give the filling of the enchilada even more flavor.  Going forward I am not going to be using ground beef for this recipe- it was too much red meat to so little vegetables for me so I plan on making it again with lean ground turkey or ground chicken.  Also, before assembling the enchilada’s, remember to heat up the corn tortilla’s in a damp paper towel in the microwave so they are soft and easy to wrap without breaking.

ansel adams in living color

I’ve always been a lover and collector of Ansel Adam’s prints.  Recently, I had the good fortune of being invited on a trip out west to Jackson Hole where I was surrounded by one of  his most famous muses, the Grand Tetons.  This was really one of the most overwhelmingly beautiful destinations I have experienced.  Here are two of my own photo’s under the original by Adams.

lovesit: missoni madness

I’ve been looking forward to the launch of Missoni’s collection for Target for weeks – September 13th had been highlighted, starred and scribbled on in every calendar and daily planner I own.  Although I was working yesterday, I planned ahead to get up a little earlier and try my best to score a few items from the highly anticipated collection online.  I wanted to grab everything – the prices were almost too good to be true but the speed at which item’s I was quickly trying to get into my virtual cart were selling out was not so good.  As much as I love target, I was beyond frustrated with the fact that their site crashed for almost the entirety of the day.  Somehow I was able to access my online shopping cart and quickly proceeded to checkout before being kicked offline again- even though it meant I was unable to access some more items I wanted to add to my bundle:

I was thrilled about the item’s I was able to buy but I still wanted more.  Last night after doing some errands with my boyfriend I found an excuse to stop by a Target on our way home.  Somehow this Target still had a decent but limited selection of the Missoni goods.  I was expecting the collection to be featured together on one display- all the home goods, kitchen ware, bath, apparel, etc but it was separated throughout the store in each item’s designated department which made me feel like I was on an easter egg hunt trying to track everything down.  A couple of the kitchen items I had ordered online were in stock and they were even better in person than I had expected so I can’t wait to get them in the mail.  However, some of the other items I had been considering  but didn’t have the opportunity to add to my cart, were really less than stellar and looked more cheap than chic.  In particular, the glass vases looked very budget as did the black pumps, the paper-lined picture frames and framed swatches of the Missoni print.  Basically any of the item’s that had Missoni-printed paper involved looked like it had been glued on by a 5-year-old.  They had a lot of the girls/ infant collection available which, frankly was cuter than most of the women’s collection.  A lot of the women’s lingerie/loungewear was still available but I wasn’t really dying for any pieces from Missoni’s women’s collection except for the yellow bikini, scarves and belted cardigan which were sold out early on.  I think their home and kitchen collection was really their best offering and I’m still holding out for one of the throw blankets which are one of the highlights of the collection.  After speaking with a Target employee I was told most of the stores would be restocking their Missoni inventory later in the week but there was no word yet on the website getting more.

fresh from the farm to my kitchen

There are few things I love more about summer than the variety of fresh fruits and vegetables available to make cooking a homemade meal even more special and enjoyable for me.  During the summer months, local farm stands pop up throughout downtown Boston offering everything from homemade pies and breads to organic herbs and produce.  Being able to pick up fresh items on my walk home everyday is such a treat I look forward to all year.  Buying fresh food throughout the week has such a European-style appeal and it makes deciding on a dinner menu a little more authentic when the meal depends on what’s available and looks good that day.  While still on a fish-kick after recently making some delicious Tilapia Po Boy sandwich’s I decided to pick out an exotic blend of tomatoes and squash to roast with the remaining Tilapia filet’s in my fridge.  After I roasted the veggies with a little olive oil, salt, pepper and Cajun seasoning, I included them as a side to this recipe by Bobby Flay for Grilled Tilapia with Lemon Butter, Capers and Orzo.  This recipe is really delicious and surprisingly easy- I would make this again with almost any fish- even shrimp or scallops would be a delicious substitute.  The lemon butter is also a great spread for other dinner items like corn on the cob or pastas.

an easy meal inspired by the big easy

I love getting to visit my brother down in New Orleans.  No matter how many times I’ve been there, it never loses its appeal – it’s a special place I hope to return to many times to come.  From the quality of the live music, the strong and tasty drinks available at every turn and the unbelievable Cajun food which tastes better than I remember each time I go, New Orleans always leaves me wanting more.  The style of food in New Orleans is so unique and savory it instantly became a favorite of mine.  The exotic Creole and Cajun flavors of heavy seafood infused meals the city is famous for, like etouffee, gumbo, charbroiled oysters, jambalaya and po’ boy sandwiches leave me craving these savory dishes long after I’ve left.  One of my favorite Food Network personalities, Paula Deen recently featured her own her po’ boy recipe featuring broiled tilapia with homemade tartar sauce I couldn’t resist trying.  And to add my own twist and make it as authentic as possible, I added a few dashes of my go-to spice direct from New Orleans: Slap Ya Mama.  The result was a messy but extremely delicious po’ boy rivaling anything I’ve had in the Big Easy.  You can find her recipe here – Enjoy!

Here are three spices I rarely cook without- from pasta sauces, marinades and especially this po’  boy recipe, these exotic flavors make any meal really stand out.  While the middle spice, Tony Chachere’s Original Creole is available at most supermarkets, Slap Ya Mama and LA Cajun Seasoning are usually only found in the south so my brother always bring me a new stash every time he comes home.

The homemade tartar sauce really stood out in this meal- it’s so tasty I’m going to have to use this recipe anytime I need tartar sauce in the future.  Instead of sweet pickles, I used dill- and I almost doubled the amount called for since I liked the added crunchy texture.

starting over: inspiration and style for a new space

It’s been several weeks since we moved into our new apartment and I am still struggling to set it up and arrange everything the way I saw it coming together in my head (the other side of our bedroom is still a storage space for art.)  With more space and a very different layout than our last place, it’s been a challenge finding the ideal home for each piece of furniture, artwork and the decorations.  Although the apartment is in an extremely old building, the unit itself is newly renovated and offers my favorite combination of old and new, with an exposed brick wall providing ambiance and a nice pop of color that fairs well with my mostly neutral color palette.  With everything finally unpacked, I decided it would be best to find pictures of living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens I covet to help me design and furnish my new space.  While I sometimes have a hard time deciding on what furniture style or decorative items I like for a new space, I always know what I don’t like – and take it from there.  That being said, I would be totally lost if I didn’t have some inspiration for the overall look I am going for.  Here are some fabulous examples of gorgeous gender neutral/modern/rustic /sleek interior design styles I’m LOVING and drawing inspiration from as I work on making my home a home- and hopefully painting a charcoal grey accent wall in the bedroom in the process (an idea I stole from image # 3, below.)

artist addiction: dale chihuly

I’ve had a long time obsession with glass- abstract, functional and decorative.  Dale Chihuly, one of my favorite living artists and glass artist extraordinaire currently has a large exhibit at the MFA, Boston so I jumped at the first chance I got to check it out with my mom.  It was beyond anything I could have imagined or expected from this master of molten manipulation.  Each room,  each installation was more fantastical than the last and I was going over board snapping hundreds of photos with my iPhone, trying to capture what I was experiencing.  I now have tons of incredible photos but I just need to decide what to do with them.  The pops of electric colors and abstract, sea-form shapes are so amazing I am having the hardest time choosing which photos to display and how- I’m thinking of having a few of the prints blown up and framed in a series which I’ll hang in one of my hallway’s to add a fresh pop of color just in time for summer.  Looking for something to do this weekend?  The cost of admission to the Chihuly exhibit is less than $30 and even if you’ve seen his work before this exhibit was so inspiring and large-scale it’s really worth checking out (and it will be around through mid-August.)  For more information, please visit here.

because there is no such thing as calories on sundays

Any food craving of mine on a lazy weekend afternoon is usually something savoy and full of cheese.  I just happened to have the few ingredients required to whip up Ina Garten’s version of a Croque Monsieur and it was the perfect guilty pleasure snack.  It’s also a bit more sophisticated and impressive to serve than your standard grilled sandwich (not to mention a step above the equally savory mac and cheese meal but just as sinful.)  What’s better than a sandwhich covered with bubbling gooey cheese right out of the oven?  My only change for next time is to add a little truffle salt instead of sea salt in the bechamel cheese sauce.

The Barefoot Contessa’s recipe I used is available here.

tasty new dinner ideas

I really enjoy cooking after work.  Something about the chopping, dicing, measuring everything out really helps me unwind and de-stress after a long day.  During the week, most dinner’s are usually some sort of chicken (or ground turkey variation) and it can be a struggle to keep the basic chicken/ rice/ pasta/ veggie combination interesting.  I’m always looking for new sauce ideas and recipes to mix things up and I recently came across several that my boyfriend and I really loved.  They were simple and extremely delicious and instantly transformed a seemingly basic dinner to something unexpected and refreshing.  Here are a few new recipes I highly recommend.

1.  After preparing one of my favorite recipes for crunchy baked chicken tenders here, I served the chicken over basmati rice, and finished by drizzling the chicken with the easiest cream cheese pesto sauce I recently came across, consisting of only 3 ingredients:

1/4 cup cream cheese
1/4 cup chicken stock
2 tbs pesto

Melt the cream cheese in a sauce pan, add vegetable stock and whisk together before adding the pesto.

~~~~~~~~
2.  My absolute favorite new recipe is something I came across and had to improvise on because I didn’t have all the ingredients required but the end result was amazing.  This pasta dish includes chicken and zucchini but I also included some diced mushrooms and cherry tomatoes to give the sauce a little more substance.  Instead of chicken stock, I used beef consomme and it added such a rich delicious flavor I’m going to have to keep this stuff in mind next time I use a recipe asking for chicken stock.  Also, instead of diced roasted red peppers, I just used a few heaping tablespoons of a red pepper spread I had picked up from Trader Joes as an appetizer.  I find appetizer spreads tend to work very well for cooking when you need to add just a little extra flavor.  A little bruschetta or tapenade, for example, can be the perfect addition to a simple dish and they tend to last a long time in the fridge.
This recipe for zucchini chicken pasta is available here.
ultimate comfort food vol. 2
When a cold front brings snow, slush and a dip in temperatures out of nowhere, I try to make the most out of being trapped inside and start baking and cooking my favorite cold weather treats.  The recent bad weather this week had my boyfriend and I craving one of our favorite winter meals, chicken parm.  There’s nothing more satisfying and delicious than chicken parmigiana right out of the oven when the mozzarella is still bubbling and the chicken is so tender you don’t even need a knife.  Here is a never fail, simple but gourmet recipe for this dinner classic.  Enjoy!
the ultimate (simple but insanely delicious) comfort food.
My friend introduced me to this recipe that combines two of my favorite hearty comfort foods which quickly became a staple recipe in my kitchen.  The following recipe for Ratatouille Sloppy Joe blends the flavor, color and nutrition of ratatouille, a traditional French vegetable stew, into an all-American favorite-Sloppy Joes.  A French flair and an optional call for ground bison help add a sophistication to this typically messy sandwich.  This meal is delicious and satisfying served on its own, but I’ve come up with alternative ways of serving the leftovers  so I can continue to make this as often as I want without making the same meal twice.  I love using the leftovers as a delicious meaty/sauce layer on homemade pizzas, in a lasagna, served over a plate of pasta, in a sandwich or as a base for a thick stew, or, simply freezing the leftovers for when I need them.
Ingredients:
1 tsp EVOO
1 lb extra-lean bison or turkey.
3 gloves garlic
1 onion, diced
2 tsp chile powder
3/4 tsp mustard powder (I used dijon mustard from my fridge)
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (adjust according to personal spice preference)
1 bell pepper- red or green
1 zucchini, diced
1 eggplant
1, 1/2 marinara sauce
1 tbsp honey or agave syrup
sea salt and fresh ground black pepper, to taste
8 sandwich buns or homemade biscuits* ( I prefer to serve this dish with my own freshly made biscuits, recipe available here.)
- Heat a large nonstick pan over medium-high heat.  Add oil, meat, garlic and onion and cook for 5 – 8 minutes, breaking up meat with a spoon while cooking, until no liquid remains and the meat is browned.  Add chile powder, mustard, and cayenne, stir well and continue to cook for 1 more minute.  Pour the mixture into a bowl and set aside.
-Return pan to heat and add bell pepper, zucchini and eggplant, stir and saute for 3 – 4 minutes.  Add meat mixture back to pan, stir well and reduce heat to medium.  Cook for an additional 10- 12 minutes, stirring often, or until all vegetables are tender and cooked throughout.
-Add the marinara sauce, 2 tbsp water and honey to the pan, stirring until meat and vegetables are coated.  Cook until sauce is hot and bubbling.  Season with salt and pepper & enjoy!
